MARY’s MEALS UPDATE
Last week, members and friends from CTiB gathered at St Aidan’s to begin sorting through the huge number of items that had been donated over the summer months by members of the community. Thank you so much to the everybody who contributed to the project – your generosity has been truly wonderful. We are delighted to report that as a result of your kindness, a total of 89 backpacks were completed and a further 3 sacks were filled with extra items, all of which will be used to complete other backpacks at Mary’s Meals. These backpacks, together with the backpacks sent earlier in the year means that in total, we have donated 149 completed backpacks and 7 sacks of extra items. The recent coffee morning also raised the fantastic sum of £200. Many, many thanks to you all!
During October Churches Together in Baildon are collecting and filling schoolbags and backpacks for “Mary’s Meals” – their chosen charity.
Mary’s Meals operates in many countries including Malawi, Liberia and Haiti setting up school feeding projects to attract chronically poor children into education. The charity provides almost 800,000 meals each school day. The children have often suffered war, famine, natural disasters and poverty and many do not have even the basic items like pens and notepads to allow them to make the best of their education. Besides providing much-needed meals the charity aims to provide every child in each of its projects with the basics for school all packed into a backpack. So far, 350,000 packs have been sent – many more are needed.
If you would like to take part in this project these are the items we would like to collect for each backpack: notepad, pencil, pen, crayons, eraser, ruler, sharpener, pencil case, towel, shorts or skirt, t-shirt or dress, flip-flops or sandals, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, spoon. Clothing can be for children between 4 and 12 years and may be second-hand in good condition. No toys or sweets please. If you have a spare backpack of the suitable size that you would like to donate please let me know.
I will be very happy to receive any donations by the end of October – thank you.
