Reflections of a Lay Pastor 10th November 2019 Remembrance Day

Celebrate your liberty, Hard-won by now-dead heroes, Mourned by friends and fam’ly.

They heard the call and chose To go, or had no choice, No option and no voice.

Celebrate your liberty, Wear fashions made by women Working hard in factories

In China, Bangladesh, and Yemen Just to feed their children, Envying you on television.

Celebrate your liberty, Eat the produce of the planet Grown by people in austerity

So we can eat like gannets, Leaving food upon our plate When hunger pains abate.

Celebrate your liberty To vote, or stay in bed, Use or abuse democracy

Lion-won, oft by donkeys led. Sacrifices past, Legacies should last.

Celebrate your liberty To buy and cast aside, To switch on electricity,

For pleasure take a ride, The cost borne by our heirs, But that’s not our affair.

Or celebrate your liberty Won by Jesus on a cross, Who loved in all sincerity,

Thought, “Giving”, gain, not loss. A model for my life, Where loving conquers strife.

So let’s not think of “Liberty,” Let “duty” serve instead, Sorority, fraternity,

Don’t hoard your cash but share the bread That came your way by chance,

And let your spirit dance!
